May Recap

At the end of April I decided to do at the end of each month a monthly recap of the month. So today is the end of May. Wow I can’t believe it is the end of May already! The month went by so quickly. It was a beautiful month. May has always been one of my favorite months. I remember celebrating May Day in school when we lived in Europe when I was younger. I always took part and I loved it.

So I guess I am going to start with my May goals and then I will also talk a bit about other things that have happened during May. I want to make this a monthly thing that I do each month more for myself then for anyone else reading just so later I can look back and see the progress I am making as well as see what happened in certain months but I think it is also interesting as a feature post that shows what is going on in my life.

May’s Goals
  • Walking – I had said I wanted by the end of may to be walking an hour a day and 10,000 steps a day. I am often hitting the goal for 1 hour of walking a day by walking to the bus and walking some extra stops as well as mall walking on my breaks. However as far as 10,000 steps I have learnt that 1 hour a day is not necessarily going to equal out to 10,000 steps a day. I am getting about 6500 though. Which is still much more then I was doing. As for two 5-7 km walks a week. I am getting in one 7-10 km walk a week on the weekend in. So I am not there yet but I am still considering it a win as I am doing better then I was.
  • Blogging – This one I am proud to say I am meeting. I think I am averaging 3 posts a week. I am writing them up on the weekend and scheduling them mostly but I am perfectly okay with that. I am still writing the posts and that takes some time and thought. I have also been playing around with themes to find one I really like. I have one I am happy with but I think I would like to use the Underscores starter theme to build and style my own theme. I already know how to build a theme from scratch but I will be honest I am too lazy too. I used to at one point but then things got a little beyond my skill level and even though I am teaching myself as I go I do not have the time I used to have to do this. I am going to start looking at tutorials.
  • Blood Sugar – I am proud to say I seem to really be getting some good results using my FreeStyle Libre and have been able to really limit my lows and highs and have gotten pretty decent control over my blood sugar. I am not getting nearly as many lows and my highs are getting better and I am having less of them as well. I wish I had taken pictures at the end of the month last month but I am going to be ensuring that I do that on a monthly basis and will likely add that into it’s own monthly post to help me keep track and to see the direction I am going in. Here are some screens from my FreeStyle Libre:

In the first picture you can see I have only had 8 lows over the last 30 days, which may seem like a lot but at one time I had 8 in a day so that is an improvement. In the second picture you see my average glucose levels broken up into 4 time periods. I tend to sometimes have some lows like the last picture shows when I wake up but sometimes I have some highs as well which is why the two pictures actually seem to be a bit confusing. In the third picture you see my time in target over the last 30 days, to me this is the most helpful screen as I can see that 71% of the time I am in target which I believe when I started the Libre back in March was less then 45% of the time in target. I am actually really happy with that screen and would like to aim for 80% by the end of next month. The last picture I will be honest. I don’t understand this one. I am not sure what it is showing me… if anyone knows let me know

Other things

I fell in love with my FreeStyle Libre this month. It has been a godsend! I loved it right away from the beginning but I now see as well how well it can help me control my diabetes and how I can see trends as to whether or not I am heading into a low or a high and correct it. I love that it helps keep my fingers from feeling like a pin cushion I also found out that should I need to get one at some point I could get coverage for an insulin pump. Right now my doctor wants to hold off and see how I make out with only one shot a day at night of Basaglar (a long acting insulin) and if I need to go back on a short acting insulin like NovoRapid and if so then consider a pump.

I purchased a subscription to Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom because I plan on taking more pictures and going more places and as I want to get back into blogging more and designing WordPress themes eventually myself I figured it would be a good thing to invest in.

Edward and I hiked Cape Split on May 19 and it was beautiful! I got a lot of pictures which if you haven’t seen them you can see them here. I am really proud of most of them. I am really hoping to get some time to take some online tutorials/lessons on photography and learn some more about taking pictures. I have taken a lot more pictures this month then I have in a long time and we have gone on a walk or hike every weekend. The feature image for this post was from the Cape Split hike from the beautiful woods we walked through before getting to the end of the cape.

As for health I have been pretty healthy considering. I had a bad cold a week into the month and still have a cough, runny nose, etc from it but am feeling much better now and better every day. I have ran out of sick days from earlier in the year already so I am trying to rack up all the extra lieu hours I can and I since I had a lot of vacation time saved up due to going on short term and not using it I have booked off 2 long weekends each month over the summer and a whole week in August.

This one I did not blog about but Edward fell a few weeks ago and hurt himself pretty good. At least I don’t think I mentioned it. He fell at work when he was outside changing garbage’s. I thought he had done some damage to his arm because it was badly bruised and had a huge lump on his arm but it seems mostly fine now and the bruising and swelling and lump went back down. He would not go and get it checked

Dad’s 66th Birthday was last week and we went to the Casino Nova Scotia for the Prime Rib buffet. It was wonderful! I loved it. I actually did not have any prime rib or mussels (I’m allergic to mussels) but there was a ton of other stuff there, soups, salads, pizza, pork, chicken, rice pilaf, vegtables, and lots of deserts. We had a great time and then I lost $20 in less then 5 minutes at a slot machine. Edward took a bit longer, about 30 minutes Dad had a good time and so did the rest of us.

Last week as well a beloved childhood amusement ride and a part of an amusement park my parents used to take me to when we lived in Germany burnt down. The park is Europa Park in Rust, Germany. This was my favorite amusement park we visited while we lived there. The ride was called Piraten in Batvia (Pirates in Batvia) and it was completely destroyed along with some other things in the area of the ride in the Scandinavian section of the park. No one was injured that I know of but it was quite the fire that needed over 200 fire fighters to put out. The ride was apparently open and in use at the time.

If you comment on this post I would love to know one thing (or more) that happened to you in the month of May?

Pockwock Falls & Halifax Public Gardens

Edward and I hiked early this afternoon to Pockwock Falls and then went to lunch at Vernon’s Thunderbird Diner and ended the afternoon at the Halifax Public Gardens. This was my plan since last weekend. With the exception of Vernon’s Thunderbird Diner which was sort of a spur of the moment thing. I already have next weekend planned as well, the Chester Connection Trail and a walk through the Town of Chester. I am excited to walk the Chester Connection Trail again. I used to walk it a lot when I lived in Chester a few years ago. The featured image above was from the Halifax Public Gardens. I have to work a little more on my focus and lighting but I really am enjoying macro photography the most.

This is pretty much the only photo I got of the Pockwock Falls and it is not the best photo because I was literally on a small rocky cliff over the water that was all mossy and wet and so full of bugs that I had a hard time standing still as I was getting eaten alive. It was a bit of a boring walk to the falls but it was down a road called Camptown Road which is part of the Old Annapolis Road. According to Wikipedia:

Work began in 1784 and was resumed in 1816 as a military settlement plan for Napoleonic War veterans. Known various times as the Annapolis Military Road, the Dalhousie Road and the Kempt Road, it led to some successful settlements but was never completed and was abandoned in 1829.

It just looks like a trail now but you can almost imagine the horse and buggy’s traveling to Annapolis on it! It was a bit of a boring but quick walk down only about 30 minutes. Then another 5-10 minutes following the river upstream to the waterfall. It was just before an old coach bridge. When we stepped off the path to go into the woods it was muddy and I just about lost my sneaker in the mud and went right over my ankle in the mud but it was worth it We are going to have to go back before the summer is out, covered in insect repellent and hike the other side as you can get to the top of the waterfall.

After this about 2:30 pm we headed for Vernon’s Thunderbird Diner and I am sorry to say that once again I did not think to take any pictures there, not even with my camera. The food was pretty good, no the best I have had at a diner but by far not the worst either. I had the classic burger and fries and a chocolate milkshake and Edward had a monarch cheeseburger and fries and a coffee and we shared potato skins.

After that about 3:30 or 4 pm we headed back into Halifax to the Halifax Public Gardens for a nice stroll through the gardens. I got a lot more pictures at the Public Gardens. I will admit I do not know the names of most of the flowers with the exception of the tulips. Maybe Susanne might. I am hoping Here are a few of the nicer ones I took.

There are a few more as well. If you would like to see the rest you can see them here. I am pretty satisfied with how most of them turned out. There is even more then what is in the gallery as well. I just didn’t get them all edited in Lightroom. I just tackled my favorites. All in all it was a wonderful weekend.

Yesterday we changed the tires over to all season ones on our car. We had 3 good tires and one passable one so we put them all on without having to buy any yet. This year we will need to get 2 new winters and next year 2 new all seasons. We had another piece of metal in one tire though and had to have it plugged We also worked in the backyard with my Dad, well Eddie more then me. There wasn’t much I could do really. They are pretty close I think to being able to get the pool up. I can’t wait! I love to swim Friday we went to the Casino Nova Scotia for my Dad’s 66th Birthday. It was nice to have today off. My next long weekend is the weekend of June 10th, Mom’s Birthday. I always have the Friday & Saturday off and I took the Sunday as well and as well as Sunday June 27th I believe. I know I have 2 Sundays in June.

Oh and I did a new theme. I used the Underscores starter theme and designed it myself. I still need to tweak a few things like the comments layout and there is no search which I want to add it somehow. I will figure that out at some point this week. I am going to keep using Underscores I think. I like it. There is a lot you can do with it and it saves from making everything from scratch, it is mostly just adding CSS and changing a few things or adding a few things. It’s a simple theme but I like it.

Well that was my weekend in a nutshell. How was yours?

Europa Park

When I was 5 my Dad was posted to CFB Baden Söllingen in Germany. One of our favorite places to visit when were were there was an amusement park called Europa Park in Rust, Germany. We went a few times a year each year that we were there, which was 6 years in total from January 1985 to July 1991. Every year I would look forward to our trips to Europa Park and to going on the rides. I am a huge amusement park fan and fan of roller coasters, flume rides and most other rides with the exception of ferris wheels or anything similar.

My mom told me today that one of my favorite rides Piraten in Batvia which was built in 1987 is on fire. I remember going on it when it first opened. It was a large water ride with big pirate ships that you get into and ride through a large building through a pirate themed land. Apparently the fire has completely destroyed the ride as well as apparently a large section of the park and damaged other rides as well. I was really sad to hear this. It was one of my favorite rides and I was looking forward to visiting again someday and seeing all the old rides I used to enjoy as well as the newer ones.

Europa Park is the most popular amusement park in Germany and second most after Disneyland Paris (formerly Euro Disney Resort) in Europe. From the media it says that no one was injured. Which is really a miracle since the park was full of people and from what I understand the ride was in use and people were on it when the fire sparked. A large section of the park the Scandanavian section was badly damaged or destroyed. I’m not sure if any other sections were destroyed or damaged.

Below is a video of the ride:

I remember other rides and sections of the park as well. I remember a flume ride and roller coaster that went through part of the same building as well as a bobsled themed roller coaster as well. It was always a part of our summer traveling while we were there to go to Europa Park with friends of the family and some of my school friends. I think I even went on school events there as well.

I am sad to here that such a big part of my childhood is gone and may never get to be enjoyed by future generations (including my own kids someday I hope) in the way that I got to enjoy it. Hopefully they will be able to rebuild it exactly as it was but they may not. Only time will tell. I am just glad to hear that no one got seriously hurt though terrified locals and tourists alike had to run away from the fire, heat and smoke. That would have been truly terrifying. I know every time I get on a ride from here on out it will be in the back of my mind.

Happy Birthday Dad!

Yesterday was my Dad’s 66th birthday. Apparently my Mom asked him what he wanted to do for his birthday and he said he wanted to go to the Casino Nova Scotia. So that’s where we went tonight to the 3Sixty Buffet. I could kick myself for not taking a few photos of our supper. It was amazing! It was a prime rib buffet with Soup, 2 kinds of pizza (pepperoni and vegetarian), for other entrées they had roasted porklion with cranberry salsa, baked chicken with pesto cream sauce, maple & thyme salmon, mussels with garlic butter, chive mashed potatoes, vegetable rice pilaf, pasta, yorkies, medley of vegetables. There was also a salad bar and desert station with soft ice cream as well as assorted pies, buffet cakes, brownies, ice cream toppings, cupcakes, cookies, assorted puddings, bread pudding and all the free pop you could drink. I’ll admit. I am now stuffed and lets just say my blood sugars a bit too high but not too bad lol

I was careful what I ate and only had a glass of regular pop because we waited in line an hour first and it was almost 8 PM before we ate and my blood sugar was a little low. Then I said the hell with it and had ice cream. It was Mom, Dad, my brother Denton, a family friend Mary Ellen who is here at my parents place until mid-July from Ontarion and Edward and myself. We all absolutely loved the food and you will never guess how much the buffet actually costs per person. $9.99 a person if you are a player’s club member! You can’t even get a value meal at McDonald’s for that! We all signed up for a player’s club membership because it’s free and you earn points as well.

After the buffet Denton, Edward and I played a few machines. Mom, Dad and Mary Ellen didn’t really feel like playing them.  Mom had given us each $20 to play, which is usually what we go with when we go ourselves (which we have only done once so far). It doesn’t sound like much but the few times I have gone other people with me who also only spend $20 can usually walk away with double that sometimes. Me, not so much. I am horrible at playing the slot machines and I usually loose the whole $20 within minutes. Which was no different tonight. Lost it all within 10 minutes on the first machine I went to I will admit though I had a wonderful night with my family and my husband celebrating my Dad’s birthday. The only thing like I said I regret is not taking my phone out and getting a few pictures of the food. I want to start doing that when I eat at someplace new.

Quebec City & St. Lawrence River in August!

I have a week of vacation booked from August 26th to the 30th and I don’t work the 24th and 25th or the 31st and 1st of September either (weekend before and after vacation) so that is 9 days in a row off. I mention this to my Mom as I wanted to see about borrowing their camper for the week to go camping somewhere close by. Instead my Mom came up with the idea that her, my father, Edward and I go camping along the St. Lawrence River in New Brunswick & Quebec all the way to Quebec City.

I have been through Quebec City before mostly just driving through it or around it or going through it on a train but I have never really walked around in Quebec City or seen any of the sights. I am really excited to go. My parents have been before buy my husband has never been near there. Neither of us have been along the St. Lawrence river, though my parents have.

Last real vacation I had for a week at a time that I went anywhere was 2 years ago when Edward and I got married and we went camping for a week at Falls Lake. Last year I took a week but stayed at home and Edward worked so I pretty much just watched tv at home. This will be a lot more fun

I plan to bring my camera obviously and take lots and lots of pictures. We will all be going in my parents van together and leaving our car home. My brother also likely will not be able to come as he will need to work. I also forgot to mention Mary Ellen who is a family friend who was here for a few months in 2016 when Eddie and I got married is back for two months this summer. She arrived on Tuesday last week. She will already have gone back home to Ontario by the time we go though.
