I have a little secret…

Yes I do, a little known secret that no one but my family knows…. I love Dolly Parton! I was browsing some blogs and people were talking about their favorite Christmas songs and favorite Christmas movies and I was thinking about mine and I have to say my favorite Christmas movie of all time has always been A Smoky Mountain Christmas starring Dolly Parton and Lee Majors.

We moved to Germany when I was almost 5 years old. I was homesick when I first got there and missed my family and friends. I may have been young but it was a huge change for me. We lived off of the base in a little town called Hügelsheim which is a small town near the base which was near the Rhine River in western Germany, near the border of France. I started going to school that year, Kindergarten and I went to a school off of the base and the kids only spoke German. My parents believed it was best to just immerse me in the language and culture.

I ended up changing schools within a few months to the school on CFB Baden-Soellingen (Canadian Forces Base or CFB) which was really near the town we lived in and where my father worked. Mom was not working at the time but soon started working in a cafe there. I was switched first to French immersion classes and then in grade 1 my teacher was horrible so they switched me into an English class. Something I regret to this day. But anyways…

I remember our first Christmas there we watched A Smoky Mountain Christmas because it reminded me of home and of my grandparents and Aunt who I was really close too. From then on renting that movie on Christmas Eve became a tradition that lasted over 10 years until we were living in Calgary and could no longer find the movie anywhere.

Earlier this month after searching and searching and searching my Mom found it on Amazon.ca and purchased it and it was delivered on Friday! Unfortunately it is in Digby and I am in Halifax but my Mom asked me if it was okay if her and my brother Denton watch it since he has not see it since he was about 3, which he probably doesn’t remember. I said I’m okay with it and I actually found it on YouTube in it’s entirety. But it is not the same as owning it!

It gives me something to look forward to next year though! And I might just purchase a copy myself so that I can start the tradition with my own kids, if we have any. Or even with just Cory and I, I think it would be pretty nice.

So I am going to leave you with the song A Smoky Mountain Christmas from the movie of the same name with Dolly Parton and Lee Majors.

  1. Hmm, and you told me you don’t like country music?? I don’t believe you one bit!
Dolly is a brilliant musician and songwriter. She’s written some of the most beautiful and at the same time heartbreaking songs ever made. Look for Blue Valley Songbird, Coat of many colours, Mary of the wild moor. I love her voice and she can play several instruments too.
I’m going to play more music from now on. I miss it so much when I don’t take time to do it for a long time.
Also in case you look for it later on, I’ve been so bored and so annoyed with everything blogging lately that I actually removed my personal blog. I have nothing to say there and there are so few personal or other interesting bloggers out there that the whole blogging concept only annoys me these days. I’m setting up a photoblog at Tumblr where I will share photos from everyday life, sort of like how people use Instagram (which is also very annoying by the way) and will write about music (which, of course, is dependent on that I play some..) on my old music site that is still out there.

Talking about music and Christmas music, I love bluegrass and country Christmas CDs, my favourite album is Blue grass, white snow by Patty Loveless where my favourite song is “Christmas time’s a-coming” but there are lots of good songs on it. Another one of my favourites is a country song recorded by Suzy Bogus and Michael Martin Murphy on one of his CDs, it’s Two-step around the Christmas tree, it has a nice feel and great fiddle playing.

    1. I know I did say I didn’t like country music but I am slowly realizing that 1) my Christmas music tastes vary greatly from my normal everyday music tastes. I dislike much of the rock, pop, etc Christmas music. Country just seems much better and 2) that overall my music tastes are changing a bit over the last few years. I should just stop resisting lol. I will check out more of Dolly Parton’s music. I love any of her Christmas stuff.

I wondered where your blog went I got a message saying you replied to my comment and I went and the blog was gone. I struggle a lot with keeping up with my blog sometimes. I get bored of reading others blogs and find a lot of the blogs I enjoyed reading in the past that were all personal and about peoples lives where going really commercial with paid posts and blogging about products. I have thought a few times of getting rid of mine but would miss it too much and keep coming back. I would rather a few weeks or even a month of no posts when I have nothing to say then to delete it all and then wish I didn’t. So for now I am staying. But I understand what you mean.

I am going to look up all the songs you have mentioned and keep reading your music blog cause I really want to expand my musical tastes. I wish I did not get rid of my guitar. I might get one in a few months when I get over the financial stress of the holidays and try learning to play. Just something to start out with. I can read music.

That is great that you will be able to have it to watch and sounds like a really nice tradition to carry on.

The only major traditions we have are putting Mr Hanky on top of the Christmas tree (ahha a bit weird) and my dad and I play cricket on the last day of the year and have for the last 20 years.

    1. Cricket? Thats pretty cool, I don’t think I have ever played.

  3. Awww its so good that you can watch it again! Like you said, watching it on Youtube isn’t as good as owning it, but it’s there for you to watch whenever you want =] Glad it brings back good memories. I don’t think my family has any Christmas traditions, but we should come up with some! It’s so good that your family does to bring you all closer at holiday time! Have a lovely Christmas!

    1. It’s true that on YouTube it is there for me to watch whenever I like. As long as it does not get taken down. Christmas traditions are really fun and a great way to add “family time” into the holiday

And thanks, I hope you had a lovely Christmas as well.

  4. Dolly Parton is cool. She seems so independent and takes no shit from no one. I secretly love her for that reason, plus, she seems so nice. Though I do have to add that she was in a movie 9 to 5 (I believe that’s the title) and I really enjoyed that particular movie.

    1. Dolly is really cool. I love that she does her own thing and doesn’t seem to let anyone push her around or influence her. Talking about the movie 9 to 5, I loved that movie! I am going to have to try and find that and watch it again. It was great!

Every time I comment on your site I laugh to myself and think “so this is what they meant when they said I’d use math in places I didn’t think I would”.

I have so many favorite Christmas movies. I love the old classics, Frosty the Snowman, The Grinch, The Little Drummer Boy. I love watching the different versions of Christmas Carol. I love Home Alone. I can’t really pick one. I just love Christmas time in general.

PS, Dolly Parton is awesome :).

    1. Haha sorry about that. Math captcha is the only way I can keep the spam away. Akismet was dumping way to much of my real comments in the spam queue or deleting them completely and other plugins did not seem to work

I love all those movies as well. We actually saved all the home alone movies on our DVR when they were on over the holidays! I love watching them and other Christmas movies.

I totally agree with the comment above mine (Arlene’s)! So this is where we would use math when we thought we wouldn’t need to haha

I’ve actually never been into country but I do have to admit that I’ve listened to a couple of Dolly Parton’s songs before. For my favorite Christmas movie…oh man, I’d have to say it would be ALL of the Home Alone movies and Elf My absolute favorite!

As for music, I’m not so sure as I pretty much love them all. The holidays are my favorite!!

    1. Haha, again sorry about that, as I mentioned above its the only one that seems to work at preventing massive amounts of spam.

I am not into country much either except around Christmas. I find that the Country Christmas songs are much better then the pop or rock or other genres usually. There are a few good songs out there that aren’t country but there are tons of country ones.

Home alone is one of my favorites too. And I do love Elf. We saved all the home alones and some other Christmas stuff on our DVR to watch over Christmas. I’m sure they will get deleted as we need space but they were fun to watch.

I loooove Dolly Parton! I have since I was a little kid. She’s just adorable and I love her voice and the way she talks. I guess I have a thing for the country bumpkins

I’d have to say my favorite Christmas movie is either Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Charlie Brown’s Christmas. I really can’t choose between the two. I’m a sucker for watching both all year round, too. My favorite Christmas song would be Winter Wonderland! It reminds me of ice skating… even though I can’t skate for shit (lmao, it’s really a funny thing to watch me skate… or try to). Usually for traditions, we break it up on who’s house we’re going to and where, but it’s always my mom’s side of the family that we spend it with, and Scott’s mom, as well.

    1. She is adorable and she has this cute little voice. I love listening to her talk, it mesmerizes me sometimes!

I love Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. We watched it at my Mom and Dad’s at thanksgiving this year and then watched Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2 (which I did not know existed), which we found in Walmart.

I love to ice skate. I actually was thinking of going tomorrow. Just trying to find a place to get mine sharpened. It’s harder to find a place then I thought.

We decided last year that we would do Thanksgiving with his family and Christmas with mine, then this year we switched it up and are just going to alternate it each year until we decide to have it at our place when we get into a bigger one.
