  • Benefiting from the kindness of strangers

Tell us about one time that you benefited from the kindness of strangers.

A few years ago my ex-boyfriend and I used to work for a delivery company as a second job to make some money. Delivering pizza’s KFC, Chinese food, etc. We started a few months before Christmas as we both needed a little spending money for Christmas and both had cars. We convinced our families it would be okay as we would always be doing it together. We each had cell phones and in between calls would hang out together in a parking lots or near one of the KFC’s we delivered for.

We had a lot of fun at first and the tips were great. His car broke down at one point and he came with me and we just split everything. We realized we could really do it either way though the people we worked for preferred us each in our own car so that they could have us both working at the same time. I was actually pretty good at it and became pretty quick. [...]

  • The Winter Blues

Anyone else tend to suffer really hard from the winter blues? I know I tend to. Each year I start the winter with high hopes that I will get out, go skating, go sledding, go skiing or snowboarding and keep active and busy and beat the winter blues. Unfortunately that never seems to happen or very seldom. Sometime around the half way mark I go from wonder at the first few seriously pretty snow falls, which I always tend to look forward to at this time of year, to just being fed up with it all and wanting so so so damn bad to be warm again!

Last winter was a particularly brutal one. We had a number of paralyzing snow storms which brought the whole city to a grinding hault. It usually happens at least once a year every year but last year it seemed to be endless. There are other years in my recent memories like that as well. For me, I think the worst thing, and sometimes the best thing, depending on how you look at it, is still having to go to work, despite the fact that my car is buried in a 10 foot snow drift that I have to spend 3 hours shoveling out of before I hit endlessly treacherous roads where I slip and slide my way into the parking lot, only to have to do the whole thing over again to drive the few blocks home. Seems pointless… why do I not just walk you say? Come on… I know that’s what your thinking. [...]

  • United Way

For the month of November every year my work, Blue Ocean Contact Center does a huge fundraiser that lasts all month for United Way Halifax. I am a huge fan of United Way since they work right in the community fighting poverty and helping to improve the health of Haligonians as they do in many communities all over North America and worldwide.

Each project at work sets up ways to help fund raise for the United Way from a change bucket, to an auction, to bake sales, to a scavenger hunt, to pie in your face (one of my projects contributions to the effort) where you pay $5 to throw a pie in the face of a coach or IST member, to our companies newest addition a general store. This year our goal was 51,500. I am happy to say when I left yesterday evening we were already at 90% and still had some of the days activities to count up. [...]

  • Harry Potter!

Who’s a fan?? I know I am. I have read all the books and seen all the movies but it has been a little while. I decided to re-read and re-watch all 7 books and 8 movies. I downloaded the first book from the library on my tablet Sunday while I was at the laundromat and have the second one on hold. I started it and am really excited to re-read them again!

I have not decided yet if I am going to read a book then watch the movie, read a book, watch the movie, etc or if I am going to read them all then watch all the movies. I guess it depends on how I am going to get a hold of all the movies. My parents have them so I may grab them when we go there on November 26th or 27th. We are getting the 27th and 28th off for American Thanks Giving as there will not be much if any call volume. So we may leave after I finish work on the 26th depending on my shift and spend the 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th there. [...]

  • Shopping for fall & winter clothing.

I struck out at Value Village yesterday, I tried on about 25 different things and was not happy with any of it. I did find one maroon colored sweater dress that was really really cute on the hanger. On me, not so much. It was a really pretty color that suited me well but it was too long. It was a cable knit and I really loved it when looking at it on the hanger but the fact it was too long just looked weird on me. I struck out in the leggings department there as well. Any they had where horrible bright gaudy patterns that just looked so wrong on me. Same with work blouses/shirts. Plenty that looked really cute on the hanger but none that looked so great on me.

The shopping trip was not completely a loss however. We went before Value Village to the Weekend Market in Dartmouth with Erin and Cory’s cousin Scotty and I did manage to get my brother taken care of for Christmas. I found a Jimmie Johnson McFarlane Toy Figure and a gold card. He is a big fan of NASCAR and Jimmie Johnson in particular. So that is him pretty much done. Might get one or two other small things for him. I also got an idea for Cory for Christmas. One of many actually. I just have to wait till the pay after next and I am going to see if I can find it online and see if I can get a better price. [...]

  • Root Canal

I am so horrible sometimes at keeping up with posting, where did the last 3 and a half weeks go? I am feeling much better but after getting over getting sick about 2 weeks ago I got another really bad infection in my back molar that broke about a year ago. I kept having to put off the root canal as I kept getting infections or getting sick. So after 2 more weeks of anti-biotics I had my root canal done on Saturday.

It went okay. I was in so much pain leading up to the root canal and then mid week last week they had to drain the abscess twice. I was terrified of the pain I would be in after the procedure as well as what it would be like during it. I have heard so many horror stories. Luckily all I felt during the whole thing was when they stuck the needles in to freeze me which I will not lie, was not pleasant but since the freezing works fast it did not last all that long. [...]
