What’s in a name?

I have to admit I am being lazy and writing up some of my blog posts ahead of time right now. So that I do not fall back into the rut of not posting for weeks, and this is one of them. C’est La Vie! So, what’s in a name? By this I mean A Story About A Girl or storyboutagirl.org. I feel like giving a bit of a back history about the domain name, my blogging and whatever else I can think of related to this.

If you have read my about section then you may already know that the name is based off of an Our Lady Peace (OLP) song called Story About A Girl off of their Gravity album. If you want to check out some of their songs you can check out their iTunes page.

I have been using a form of StoryBoutAGirl (I dropped the A in About at some point, can’t remember why) for a handle on all social media, chat, IM, etc platforms since the album was released in 2002. I fell in love with the song and I just felt at the time (and still do) that the name fits me well.

I always feel like I am telling a “story” about myself, I always feel half incomplete and it just always seemed to fit when blogging since I tend to mostly blog about myself, my feelings, my interests, just me. I do not do paid blogs or blog about products, books, etc much unless they make a huge, huge impression on me or make a difference in my life, very selfish… I know. But my blog has always been about me and a place for me to vent. If I was to do other types of blogging I would keep it off of here and buy another domain name since I have my own hosting company and have a place to host it. I would just keep them separate.

Anyways, back on topic, I think it started in 1999 when I moved with an ex-boyfriend to Fredericton, New Brunswick so he could go to school at UNB to take computer science. He was the first guy I had every really been with and had been with him off an on since 1997 during our last year of high school, when OLP, which is a Canadian band was really popular. We both loved them and listened to them all the time. You could never come over to our apartment without an Our Lady Peace song being played at least once at some point while you where there.

I found over the years they are the only band that I really really identified with and enjoy their music so much, even now though I have kind of gotten away from the 90’s indie rock music I still love to go on Pandora and listen to either a 90’s music channel I created or an OLP one.

We moved in 1999 to NB and in 2000 after a few months of being there I started to get really really depressed, I was suffering from anxiety and panic attacks and was really overwhelmed with being that far from my parents. I had never been that far from home and being prone to anxiety it just really hit me hard at that point.

My ex was the one who taught me to really love computers (as a distraction I think, his way of trying to take care of me, though we were both completely clueless) and he taught me HTML and some basic web design, he taught me to use Grey Matter which was I used till WordPress came out in 2003, I switched and never looked back. Over the years I have had a majority of domains and handles and always kept coming back to A Story About A Girl or StoryBoutAGirl. I registered storyboutagirl.com at some point when I worked for Register.com in 2004-2005.

I have blogged on LiveJournal, Blogger and WordPress.com at times but never really seem to stick with it. I prefer having my own domain and using WordPress hosted on my own.

Anyways, at one point I let the domain go then decided I wanted it back in 2006 and it was already registered to someone else so I bought this domain instead storyboutagirl.org and have pretty much had it ever since. I have let it go and bought it back a few times, the current blog starting in March 2013. I love the .org and I love the domain so much I can’t ever imagine changing it, just adding to it (.com, .ca etc).

Blogging has always been very therapeutic for me and in 2000-2003 when I was really really depressed to the point I was suicidal it really helped me sort out my feelings and I made a few friends in the blogging world that I have since lost touch with for the most part.

I still find blogging theraputic and plan on keeping this domain for a long time. I would like to buy storyboutagirl.com and storyboutagirl.ca at some point and point it here as well but for now I just can’t afford it (and hopefully me saying that will not have someone go buy them and me never be able to lol). Unless you wanna buy them for me kidding!

Anyways that is the story about StoryBoutAGirl and storyboutagirl.org. Looking back through this it does not seem very interesting but still why not…

Lyrics:

Story ’bout a girl
Story ’bout the world

Suddenly, somethin’ I’m not
You’re somethin’ that you bought
Or was it somethin’ I said, my friend

A little girl, are you trippin’ on this?
Are you trippin’ all over it?
You better come up for air

Story ’bout a girl, my
Story ’bout the world, my
And are you waking up slowly?
You’re nothin’ but lonely
Are you waking up holdin’
Holdin’ your breath?

And are you looking for somethin’?
I promised you one thing
I promise, I’ll always
Always be there

Baby girl, stand up and fight
This is not some paradise
Oh, it’s just where we live

And finally you think you’re alright
And that it eats you up alive
You better get used to it

Story ’bout a girl, my
Story ’bout the world, my
And are you waking up slowly?
You’re nothin’ but lonely
Are you waking up holdin’
Holdin’ your breath?

And are you lookin’ for somethin’?
I promised you one thing
I promise, I’ll always
Always be there

With all my faith, with all my heart
And all those simple things you are

And I know, it’s stuck inside your head
You’re alone, you better get used to it
And I know the feelin’ has to end
You’re strong, it sucks you in again

And you’re lost, you can’t make any sense
This world, it tears you limb from limb
And hold on, you’re nothin’ but the best

And are you waking up slowly?
You’re nothin’ but lonely
Are you waking up holdin’
Holdin’ your breath?

And are you looking for somethin’?
I promised you one thing
I promise, I’ll always
Always be there

With all my faith and all my heart
And all those simple things you are
With all my faith and all my heart
And all those simple things you are

I’ll probably do a second post today when I come back from the doctor to keep everyone updated. Thanks so much to everyone who has commented and especially to Susanne who has been very supportive!

  1. I definitely don’t think it’s selfish to blog about yourself and your life. Those blogs are the interesting blogs! If I’m looking for products I check a catalog or something…not a blog.

    1. Thanks Susanne, I am happy to hear you find them (and my blog) interesting. The only time I do not like looking at yours is when there is spiders LOL! And it is true. I do tend to look through catalogs or look for products on my own, I don’t particularly mind seeing posts like that but I find I prefer blogs that are just about products and not a mix of tons of things.
