Update: Still on crutches

I figured it’s time for an update. I haven’t felt much like picking up my laptop because I am so uncomfortable. It’s been more then two and a half weeks since my fall and I am still on crutches. The x-rays came back with no apparent fractures. I am still in a lot of pain in my knee and ankle both and still a considerable amount of pain in my back, neck, shoulder and pretty much most of my left side. I can’t put much weight on my leg and if I do I am in a lot of pain afterward. My doctor wants me off work due to the pain and fact that I still can not put weight on my leg for a while longer. He has me off until at least July 9th for now.

I started physiotherapy yesterday. The physiotherapist confirmed that my ACL and Meniscus seem to be intact but feels I have a grade 2 sprain and partial tearing in my MCL and that I have a grade 2 eversion sprain and possible tearing to the ligaments on the inside of my ankle. He wants me to remain non-weight bearing for another week or  so and then toe touch and then partial weight bearing as tolerated but not to overdue for the next week or two after. He also taped up my knee. Which may not seem like a lot but it really helps with the swelling, as my knee was really swollen before. You could clearly see the fluid on my knee. Luckily I don’t have much bruising and the swelling in my ankle is minimal but still there.

He was concerned about the fact that I have an eversion sprain (sprain to the inside instead of outside of the ankle) as he said usually that is associated with a fracture at the end of the fibula. I don’t really understand that as when I looked it up the fibula is the outside bone not the inside one. He mentioned to let my doctor know when I do a followup that it seems I may have an eversion sprain as my doctor may want to do another x-ray to confirm if there is a fracture there as it might not have shown up unless they knew what they were looking for on the first x-ray. I would assume they would check for that but maybe not?

So crutches have been an adventure and a half. I have fallen twice on them, the second time I even hurt my ankle a bit more. I am still having a hard time being non-weight bearing or no more then a toe touch weight bearing which I have had to do a bit to maintain balance. I am trying not to put too much weight as I don’t want to rupture anything while it starts to heal but I am really having a hard time on crutches. I don’t know if it is because I am overweight. I don’t imagine an extra 40 lbs bodyweight really helps. I also find it aggravates my back and neck which hurt from the fall itself.

I am able to get to the washroom and back but trying to get to my car and down the stairs in my building is hard. We are on the second floor of building that is definitely not wheelchair accessible. Going to physio yesterday tired me out so much I could barely move around the house last night. The palm (heel area) of my hands feel bruised and numb and painful and my forearms hurt and my shoulders. The physiotherapist readjusted my crutches yesterday and showed me how to properly use them including going up and down stairs and how to sit and stand from a chair which helped a little.

Last night Edward suggested we take the self adhesive ace bandage that I bought for my knee which I don’t need and wrap it around the hand grips on the crutches to see if it helps absorb some of the shock and help with the pain and it works really well!

Don’t mind the scratches on our couch, our cat has made a mess of it.

I can’t wait to get off the crutches and I can’t wait to get back to work. Sitting around all day is boring, at least I have CBS All Access and Netflix and a bunch of other stuff on our Roku.

Salt Marsh Trail

On Sunday June 10th Edward and I decided to go to the Salt Marsh Trail in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia for a walk. This is one of my favorite trails to walk on and is part of the Trans Canada Trail system which amazingly enough is 24,000 km, the longest recreational trail in the world! It extends into all 13 of our Provinces & Territories! I love walking this trail. It is a 9 km linear trail which means it never connects back with itself, it just goes from one point to another. We only walked about 1.5 to 2 km and then back again. It’s a pretty place to take pictures and enjoy forest and salt marshes. The salty air is refreshing and it’s a great place to see birds, go biking or walking. There are usually some pretty flowers, bushes and trees along the way.

It starts out from a parking lot along Bissett Rd in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. It goes both ways from the road but I have only ever gone in one direction, towards the salt marsh. It starts off as a woodsy trail.
I love dandelion’s as long as I don’t pick them and get the white stuff inside the stem on me. I am apparently allergic. I read somewhere that it is latex which I have had reactions to in the past which I find interesting
You come out of the woodsy part of the trail to this view. The sky was perfect and the salty air so cool and refreshing on a hot day.
There are some interesting tree’s along the trail. This I believe is a birch of some kind. I love the pattern, almost a camouflage in the bark. It makes for an interesting picture I think. Sorry it’s slightly out of focus
I love the sky and the colours in this picture! I love the view from the trail. It’s always really pretty and serene and relaxing.
As we were walking this seagull was looking for food and he came up with a crab in his mouth! I actually got a really close up picture as well that you can see the crab but it was really out of focus but it was still to see. I am sorry this one is slightly out of focus as well. I was trying to manually focus but was not fast enough. I need to read a bit about taking pictures of birds in flight.
The sky was just amazing! I love all the cumulus clouds. It was such a nice day to walk the trail. All we say for birds was seagulls but I was on the lookout for other ones as well.
Catching birds in flight is a lot harder then it would seem. I need some practice and maybe I don’t have the right lens for it. Not sure. But it still turned out okay. Not great but okay.
Last bird one I promise. This one I am pretty proud of. It’s actually fairly clear and I was fairly close. It looks better when you click the picture, much clearer.
This is the view pretty much on both sides of the trail through more then half of it with some bridges along the way.
I think I have mentioned this before but I love bridges and boardwalks and wooden walkways.
One of my favorite flowers in the lady slipper. We have some here in places. I saw one on our walk back but it was far into the woods and as there is poison ivy right along the edges of the path I didn’t dare go off the path. However just as I was about to get into our car at the end I saw this one just a few feet from my car. Fearing there still might be poison ivy in the area I didn’t leave the gravel parking lot so I just zoomed in on it. Even though we have them here I have never seen one this close before.

We ended our walk about 1:30 pm and headed home to grab some laundry and head to my parents as it was my Mom’s birthday as well. We went out to my Aunt Ferne’s for cake and ice cream after supper. It was a nice end to the weekend. Usually I work Sunday’s but I have been using some vacation time throughout the spring and will be in the summer for some 3 day weekends before our week vacation in August and Quebec City and the St Lawrence River trip we will be taking.

Sadly after our walk when we got to Mom and Dad’s we found out that there was a huge forest fire on Bissett Rd and at the Salt Marsh Trail less then an hour after we left It started out on one side of the trail and jumped the road to the other side and then due to high winds by evening it was threatening over 100 houses with the mandatory evacuation of about 10 houses in the area and voluntary evacuation of the other 90 throughout the night into the next day. Finally late in the afternoon they had it about 80% under control and by bedtime 90-100% under control. The cause is unknown at this time but like most forest fires in the area it is likely man made due to a careless person throwing a cigarette or a bonfire, etc.

Birthdays

Today is my good friend Susan’s Birthday and tomorrow is my Mom’s birthday. I met Susan through her best friend Kristy who is one of my best friends as well. Along with my husband Edward and my best friend Erin we have all become pretty close and try to spend an evening together once a month at the very least. Yesterday we all went over to Susan’s along with Kristy’s brother Johnny and a friend of Susan’s named Luke and we played Cards Against Humanity and had birthday cake.

We had a wonderful time! I love Cards Against Humanity. It’s really fun to play when drunk apparently too Most people who know us would think I would be the 3nd last person on earth to play Cards Against Humanity, Erin would be the second last and Susan the last but we always have so much fun when we do. Edward loves it as well. We went over about 6 pm and stayed till about 11:30 pm we left at that time only because my best friend Erin was our ride home.

The last time that I drank was almost 2 years ago at my bachelorette party. I always get really sick when I drink, like violently ill. So I don’t usually drink. I am not sure exactly why but thought it might have something to do with my blood sugar raising to quick and too high. It’s happened for years but since I was diagnosed with diabetes I started to wonder if it had something to do with that since I likely was diabetic a while before I was diagnosed. Last night I decided I wanted to drink a little because I was tired of always being the one who wouldn’t touch alcohol not because I am against it, but because I couldn’t handle it. Since Eddie only has a learners it meant we had to leave our car at Susan’s which was okay because we only live a 15 minute walk from her place.

I ended up having some Sangria that she made which was really really good as well as Kristy made some jello shots with grape and berry blue jello. I had enough to get pleasantly drunk but not enough to get hung over. I decided that since I had Freestyle Libre that I could keep a close eye on my blood sugar to make sure I didn’t end up in the high teens or 20’s or higher. It seemed to work out well and other then a mild stomach ache overnight I didn’t even have a hang over today which made me incredibly happy. That little device is the best thing in the world! It was a very pleasant evening I didn’t take any pictures, didn’t bring my camera and wouldn’t put anything

Tomorrow is my Mom’s birthday. Mom is not very keen on celebrating birthdays but it looks like we might be going to my Aunt Ferne’s after supper tomorrow at my parents to have some cake and ice cream. From May to the end of July is just a pile of birthday’s. Denton, my brother’s is June 21st, mine July 6th and Eddie’s July 11th and then our 2 year anniversary is coming up August 27th. I love summer because of all the birthday’s and celebrations and not just the weather
