A Story About A Girl

Exercising & Walking

I’ll be honest, I am doing up a couple posts at a time and scheduling them as I know I will not have time during the week days. Friday and Saturday are my days off, Edwards too. I am not aiming to make this a diabetes blog but it’s what’s on my mind right now. I want to go into a bit more detail about one of my May goals.

Since I am now taking the bus back and forth to work I am walking to the bus stop and back. Which I will be honest about as well, it is not far. 4 minutes and then I get off at Scotia Square Mall and just walk into the mall through the food court and upstairs via the stairs, elevator or escalator depending on my mood. Going home I have to walk a litte further since I take a different bus home and have to walk about 7 minutes to my bus stop from the mall. I also walk around the mall a lot just to increase my steps and my walking time. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy G6 with the Samsung Health app on it which I am hoping to utilize more. I am getting about 30-45 min walking a day and about 3500-7000 steps a day.

I want to aim for 1 hour and 10,000 steps. To start anyways. I would like to add more exercise in other forms as well. I am considering a gym again or the Canada Games Centre which I previously a few years ago had a membership for. For now though I had previously set my goal to half the recommended which was 30 min walking/5000 steps. I am consistently doing that now and more. I have set it now to 45 min/7000 steps. Once I consistently meet that which I hope to do in a week or two. I will increase to 1 hour/10,000 steps. I am trying to figure out ways in my everyday activities to increase my walking time and steps without necessarily going out for a specific walk, which I would like to do as well. Once I get the bus route down to work and back (just started taking it last week) I will start walking a few extra stops on the way to work so that I am walking 2-3 stops beyond mine. I don’t want to do that at night when I come home at 9:45 PM for safety sake. My area is safe enough but still. [...]  READ MORE

April Recap

I want to start posting doing a post each month about my goals for the following month and pick 3 goals that I would like to achieve for the coming month. I would also like to do a post as well at the end of the month of a monthly recap of 3 things that have happened in my life over the last month. I have created a category for each.

Here is a recap of what happened in April.

  1. Going back to work  – So I started off April on Short Term Disability after having my wisdom teeth removed at the end of March and getting a dry socket. I started back to work half way through April on the 15th. My return was uneventful other then the fact that I didn’t get paid for a week because someone at work didn’t get me changed from unpaid STD to paid STD after my claim was approved on time. I was supposed to get paid the extra week this past Thursday and didn’t. I called HR and they advised I would get it on my next pay on May 10th but I have rent to pay and bills coming out automatically. After talking to them they advanced me 60% of what they owed me on May 10th on Friday and I will get the other 40% on May 10th. At least we were able to pay everything on time and are not behind on anything but it still kinda sucked and required borrowing a little from my mom to make that happen. So now we have to pay her back
  2. Edward broke a tooth – So my husband somehow broke a tooth a week ago or so on a plastic bottle (like a pop bottle). No idea how really. He says he just hit it off the top of the bottle when taking a sip. He ended up going a week with a broken tooth. Luckily for him it didn’t hurt at all and no bleeding. It also didn’t end up costing much to fix surprisingly. Yay for 90% dental coverage! He ended up getting it fixed a few days ago and you can not even tell he did it. He also got a few cavities filled while they were at it.
  3.  I started taking the bus to work – Yep. I did. Nothing wrong with the car. It’s just to expensive to park downtown. I think I mentioned this in a post but to me its a big thing. I have anxiety and have panic attacks from time to time and buses have always been a place I have been very uneasy. I do not like crowds and I am also claustrophobic and when the bus is full (which thankfully it hasn’t been too bad due to the time I go to and from work) it makes me really uneasy. I have had panic attacks on the bus before and was of the main reasons I first got a car because I was so uneasy and felt trapped. For me taking the bus is a big step in overcoming all that. I have been medication free for years (well as far as my depression & anxiety, obviously I’m on insulin) and I was concerned I might not be able to handle it and was scared it might trigger bad memories but I am actually quite enjoying it really.

How about you, anything interesting happen this month? [...]

Spring Is In The Air!

Edward and I spent the day out today… well yesterday technically since it’s 2:30 AM. We both took a long weekend this weekend because I had a lieu day that I wanted to take and I decided I didn’t feel like working Sunday so I took the day off and he ended doing the same. We went for a walk for almost an hour in Point Pleasant Park which is a large park in the south end of Halifax by the port. The view from it is beautiful, a view of the mouth of the Halifax harbour which is one of the worlds deepest natural harbours. The second I think (maybe the first?).

I took a few pictures with my phone but unfortunately they didn’t turn out to well so I didn’t bother uploading them. We walked for 58 minutes and walked 3.30 km. We were just walking really slow and stopping to admire the view and take pictures which is why we didn’t go very far distance wise. It worked out to 5981 steps and 288 calories burned. In total I actually managed to get 10,154 steps in. I have my goal right now set to 7500 steps, need to work my way up to 10,000 and beyond. I am really proud of myself I have met my goal every day this week.

It was a beautiful day out and reached 19°C and was nice and sunny. Maybe a bit of a cool wind down around the harbour but it was still nice enough I only had on a t-shirt and capris. I am so happy that spring is here. Now all we need to do is try and get our all season tires back on. We put it off because it really seemed like winter was never going to end. We had 4 storms over 10 days just the beginning of this month. Tomorrow (today technically) is supposed to rain like 20m but still get to 14°C, then Sunday is supposed to rain 5-10mm in the morning, clear up for a cloudy but 17°C afternoon. I am hoping to get Edward out driving. He is working on getting his license, he finally has his learners. [...]  READ MORE
