Two to three paychecks away from being homeless.

This is something that has been on my mind for a while now and something I just feel like writing about. Almost half of Canadians are only two to three missed paychecks away from being homeless. I am sure this is true for many other countries as well. Something I have experienced myself is wondering where the next rent is going to come from or not getting groceries because you need to put gas in the car to get to work. It’s something that has been on my mind a lot lately because we have been struggling with money a lot.

Today, my mom told me about a story in the Chronicle Herald (Halifax) which really hit home for both of us. A 63-year-old woman, a woman my own parent’s age, suffering from diabetes living in her car in a Walmart Parking lot in Dartmouth Crossing after losing her job and then her apartment due to what she called “three bad blows”. Blows that could happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Blows that do happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time but that if you do not have a nest egg of savings to get you through can render you homeless. [...]  READ MORE

Happy Birthday Maxy!

While I am a bit belated on this my sweet little Maxy cat has turned 8! I can not really believe it but this handsome, sweet, cuddly little boy has been with me now for 8 years Back in November of 2011 my mom showed up one day at an apartment I had in the basement of a house in Hubbards, Nova Scotia with a box on the front seat of her van. I remember going out to the van and she said “Shh… come look” and low and behold this little cutie was asleep in the box

I remember thinking two things. One, wow his ears are bigger than his little furry face and two, “oh what a cute little kitty!”, at this point I don’t think yet it had even clued in that he was mine. I was wondering what he was doing in the box and why my mom, who was never a huge fan of cats had him. I hadn’t yet put 2 + 2 together and came out with 4. I asked her who’s he was and she said “yours” and I was like, “yeah, right”. See the thing is… I was not a fan of cats either. However that being said, I had mentioned to my boyfriend at the time that I was lonely there all alone and a cat would be company but I didn’t really want one and didn’t think my landlords would let me have one. [...]  READ MORE

Point Prim Lighthouse

Tonight Eddie and I went over to my parents for supper. We cooked hot dogs, hamburgers and bratwurst around the firepit. We had to pack up a little early as it was starting to rain a little. Mom decided she wanted to go into Digby for ice cream at Recardo’s. Ever since I was a kid I have loved Farmer’s bubble gum ice cream and their cotton candy ice cream. Tonight I got a scoop of each. It’s not something we do often because it puts my blood sugar up. After this, we went for a drive and we ended up at Point Prim Lighthouse. It ended up not really raining, just a few drops so we deviceded to get out and walk around a little.

The current lighthouse is the 4th lighthouse built at Point Prim since 1804. It was built somewhere around 1964 as far as I can tell based on the information I looked up on it. The first lighthouse built in 1804 and lasted only 4 years before burning in 1808. The second lighthouse also burned down about 52 years after it was built in 1817. The third lighthouse was built in 1874 and was pushed over the cliff with a bulldozer in 1964. I’m not sure the story there. It doesn’t really say. Just old maybe. [...]  READ MORE
